About Me

Jeremy Smith

Engineering Philosophy

I build systems with a bias toward:

  • simplicity over unnecessary abstraction
  • observability over guesswork
  • reliability over novelty
  • open standards over vendor lock-in
  • automation over repetition
  • least privilege over implicit trust
  • repairability over disposability
  • clear documentation over tribal knowledge

Good infrastructure should be understandable under stress. Good security should reduce assumptions. Good automation should make systems easier to reason about, not harder.

Background

I am a senior systems and infrastructure engineer with more than 20 years of experience across software development, Linux systems administration, infrastructure engineering, networking, automation, and security-focused systems design.

My work spans professional production environments and personal research infrastructure. I enjoy building practical systems, studying how they fail, and improving them until they are simpler, safer, and more reliable.

I am especially interested in roles involving:

  • infrastructure engineering
  • Linux systems engineering
  • platform engineering
  • security engineering
  • SRE / reliability engineering
  • open-source infrastructure
  • self-hosted and privacy-respecting systems
  • low-level systems and networking
