Virtualization and Containers

Intelligent use of virtualization, containers, and related isolation and provisioning technologies to model production systems, test changes safely, and rapidly reproduce any environment.

Areas of Focus

  • KVM / QEMU — full-system virtualization for infrastructure experimentation and production-like staging
  • Proxmox — integrated virtualization management for the lab environment
  • Containers & Docker — application-level isolation and portable service deployment
  • virtiofs — high-performance shared filesystem access between host and guest
  • cloud-init — reproducible, scripted provisioning of new environments
  • Storage backends — ZFS backing stores, snapshot-aware virtual disks, and filesystem layout tradeoffs
  • Network isolation — modeling multi-host networks and service topologies in software

Why It Matters

Virtualization and containers let me test operating systems, services, storage layouts, and deployment patterns before they touch production. The lab is a proving ground: reproduce a problem, try a fix, snapshot the moment, and roll forward safely. Because every environment is defined and reproducible, nothing depends on tribal knowledge or a fragile one-off setup.

Philosophy

  • Reproducible over bespoke — every environment can be recreated from definition
  • Safe experimentation — snapshot, test, revert without risk to real systems
  • Modeling production — the lab resembles production closely enough that results transfer
  • Lightweight where possible — containers for applications, virtualization where isolation and fidelity matter
